b. Dwight 'Malachi' York, Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A.
Dr. York was an accomplished singer / songwriter / producer and musician.
From Brooklyn, Dr York commenced his career as a session musician around New York and Philadelphia.
After recording with Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, The Delfonics and Evelyn 'Champagne' King he formed his own groups Jackie and The Starlights, The Students and Passion as lead singer.
He later launched his own Passion label, recording himself as a solo artist.
His debut release was the single 'It's Only A Dream' which came from the album 'New York' (1985).
The artistic contributions, on the album, included background vocals from Ted Mills of the group Blue Magic.
The track 'Plain As Black And White' proved popular on U.K. soul radio.
He also teamed up with Sarah Dash for the duet 'It's Too Late', and recorded with T.C.Curtis on the Hot Melt label in the U.K.
Unfortunately, there was a very much darker side to his personality.
A federal appeals court upheld a conviction and sentence of Dr. York, in 2005, who was also the leader of the religious sect called the United Nuwaubian Nation of Moors based in middle Georgia.
The founder of the, predominantly black group, was sentenced in April that year to 135 years in federal prison for molesting 14 boys and girls whose parents were members of his group.
Not a pleasant end to, what was, an interesting musical career.
