From Tuskegee, Alabama, Thomas was an original member of The Commodores when the group formed in 1969.

Thomas played guitar and was one of the vocalists.

In 1984 he left The Commodores and signed to Motown Records as a solo artist.

A single 'Thin Walls' (featuring Lionel Richie on background vocals) and album 'Thomas McClary' were released that year.

Thomas has also written and produced songs for Michael Henderson ('Fickle', 1983) and Klique ('Love Cycles', 1985).
